An eight-year-old Primary Four pupil, Chinemelum Chinonso of Gaius Benton School, Oko, has emerged winner of the third edition of the Joseph Onuorah Foundation Spelling Bee Competition in Anambra State.
Chinonso outperformed contestants from more than 150 nursery and primary schools across Orumba North and Orumba South Local Government Areas to claim the championship at the grand finale held at Ndiowu Town Hall.
According to the founder of the competition, Chief Joseph Onuorah, the annual event aims to promote literacy, vocabulary development, confidence in public speaking, and academic excellence among children aged seven to twelve.
Despite being one of the youngest participants, Chinonso impressed judges and spectators with his composure, accuracy, and mastery of difficult words, defeating older pupils in several competitive rounds. His victory sparked celebrations among parents, teachers, and fellow contestants.
For winning the competition, Chinonso received a cash prize of ₦200,000, making him one of the youngest champions in the history of the Orumba Spelling Bee.
The second position went to Geoffrey Chinaza, a 10-year-old Primary Six pupil of Pope John Paul Nursery/Primary School, Oko, who received ₦100,000, while Okoye God’s Purpose, an 11-year-old Primary Six pupil of Living Spring School, Oko, finished third.
The organisers noted that all winners received cash prizes, trophies, and certificates, while the 2026 edition recorded its highest participation since the competition began.
