Nigerians are expressing their frustration on social media over reports of a sharp increase in fees for fresh students at the University of Ibadan (UI). According to The Cable’s report on Thursday, April 11, 2024, several student sources confirmed the steep hike, reaching up to 480%, which was posted on the university’s online portals.
Students shared screenshots of the new rates with Legit.ng, revealing a base fee of N372,000, along with an additional N40,000 for utility and technology fees, totaling N412,000. Another screenshot showed a total university fee of N203,500 for fresh students, including both utility and technology fees. The Guardian newspaper also highlighted the situation.
The reported fee increase has sparked outrage on social media platforms, with many expressing their discontent and concern about the financial burden it imposes on students and their families.
According to reports from multiple student sources, TheCable confirmed on Thursday that the University of Ibadan (UI) has increased its fees by up to 480%. Keye Abiona, the UI dean of student affairs, initially acknowledged the hike to a media publication on campus. However, when contacted by TheCable, the dean declined further comment.
Adejoke Akinpelu, the university’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), assured TheCable that the portal would soon provide a comprehensive overview of the 2024 rates. She stated, “The fees are personalised for the students based on their courses of study and will be uploaded on their platforms from tomorrow or later. Kindly wait until the fees are uploaded and you have the facts.”
Student sources who spoke to TheCable shared screenshots of the new rates displayed on their respective portals. One screenshot revealed a base fee of N372,000 with an additional N40,000 for utility and technology fees, totaling N412,000. Another screenshot showed N203,500 in total university fees for fresh students, including both utility and technology fees. Some students in other departments reported being unable to access their studentship portal.
A student admitted in 2023 confirmed that new intakes at UI previously paid between N64,600 to N69,600. This change represents a 492.5% increase, with sought-after courses like medicine facing even higher fees.
