Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has called for collective efforts towards mitigating the challenges confronting basic education delivery in Nigeria.

UBEC executive secretary, Dr Hamid Bobboyi made the call in Abuja during a two-day meeting of UBEC management with executive chairmen of State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs) to strategize on ways of improving basic education in the country.
Bobboyi who said all hands must be on deck to tackle the challenges confronting the sector said that basic education has indeed become the concern of most Nigerians and as public awareness is increasing, “we must work hard to ensure transparency, accountability and value for money in all our transactions as many people now realise that they have a stake in the education of the Nigerian child.”

He enjoined participants to come up with achievable solutions to the many challenges facing the effective implementation of basic education in the country. “We have a lot in our hands to contend with in our pursuit to attain UBE targets (access, equity, quality and relevance). Therefore, it is imperative that all hands are on deck in seeking solutions to mitigate the challenges confronting the sub-sector,” he said.
On his part, former UBEC executive secretary, Professor Gidado Tahir said that successful implementation of the UBE programme is hinged on sound policy, good governance, transparency, good plans with clear implementation strategies.
“We have a problem with lack of commitment. When you have people who are supposed to team up and work for a common good but the other does not seem to be doing his own part there ought to be some challenges. So I think if commitments are the same all along, all through, all departments are committed to this particular objectives, we will go a long to achieving basic education,” he said.
