It’ll take Nigeria 120 years to have the required medical doctors – Mallam Adamu, Education Minister

Education Minister Mallam Adamu Adamu condemned the severity of the brain drain in the health sector, saying that if all Nigerian doctors remained in the country, it would take about 120 years for the country to have the required number of doctors.

Adamu made this point during the first matriculation ceremony of the Federal University of Health Sciences Otukpo (FUSHO) held on Friday, November 5th, at the Otada temporary location in Otukpo LGA, Benue State. According to the minister, “Statistics show that the ratio of doctors to patients in Nigeria is far lower than the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation, which is one doctor per 600 patients.

This is in line with Nigeria’s current ratio of 1:6000 A sharp contrast. Assuming that all our doctors stay in the country, it will take about 120 years for Nigeria to have the required number of doctors.”

The minister further lamented that the quality of training, capabilities and skills required by the medical industry have become a problem.”

This is due to a combination of insufficient personnel and facilities.
