How Nyingilayefa Gift Ernest from Nigeria Earned a Fully Funded Mastercard Foundation Scholarship to Study Food Security at the University of Edinburgh

Nyingilayefa Gift Ernest, a Nigerian biochemistry graduate, earned a fully funded Mastercard Foundation Scholarship to study Food Security at the University of Edinburgh, driven by her passion to combat food insecurity in her flood-affected community and empowered by resilience after an initial rejection.

Nyingilayefa Gift Ernest, a driven scholar from flood-prone Bayelsa, Nigeria, secured a fully funded Mastercard Foundation Scholarship to pursue a Master’s in Food Security at the University of Edinburgh. Motivated by her firsthand experiences with environmental challenges and food insecurity, Nyingilayefa’s academic journey is rooted in purpose and impact. With a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry and a GPA of 4.23, she built a solid foundation in nutrition, plant science, and sustainability, preparing her to address pressing food system issues through evidence-based solutions.

Her scholarship journey was inspired by stories of past recipients and strengthened by her commitment to personal development. Though her first application in 2023 was unsuccessful, she used the setback to refine her goals and essays. In 2024, she reapplied with a stronger vision and was selected. The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program offers her not just financial support—including tuition, travel, accommodation, and tools—but also mentorship, skill development, and access to a global community of climate leaders and changemakers.

Nyingilayefa attributes her success to the authenticity of her story, her alignment with the program’s mission, and her dedication to making a difference. She advises aspiring scholars to stay true to their purpose, research thoroughly, seek feedback, and never give up—emphasizing that each setback is an opportunity to grow.
