Top Nigerian University Increases School Fees From N19,000 To Over N190,000

Cursory: A top Nigerian University has increased its school fees, raising tuition from N20,000 to a range of N100,750 to N190,250, depending on the course of study.

Due to the current economic challenges, including increased inflation and higher petrol prices following the removal of fuel subsidies, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has increased its school fees.

The tuition fees have been raised from approximately N20,000 to a range of N100,750 to N190,250, depending on the specific course of study.

The variation in fees is based on whether the course requires laboratory or studio work and also applies to students enrolled in the college of medicine.

On July 20, 2023, a meeting took place at the Senate Committee Chamber of the University, led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola.

During the meeting, Prof. Ogunsola shared the details of the proposed tuition fees for undergraduate students at the institution.

A statement issued by the school’s chapter of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) said during the meeting that lasted approximately three hours, the “proposed fees for undergraduate students at Unilag were disclosed. Students without lab or studio use would pay N100,750, those with lab use would pay N140,250, and college of medicine undergraduates would pay N190,250.

“The SSANU representative, Comrade Rasaki Yusuf requested a rebate for staff members with children in the university, but the vice chancellor explained that the charges were set nationally and could not be modified for specific student categories.

“However, she offered the option of paying in instalments for staff wards with a condition to pay up one month before the final exams.”

Meanwhile, an official from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in a different federal university informed the Saturday Sun that the Federal Government did not instruct vice chancellors to impose tuition fees.

He explained that due to inadequate funding from the government, vice chancellors opted to introduce administrative fees to cover the costs of services provided to students.

“The federal government will not do anything to the VCs for the high administrative fees because the universities are not funded well. The VCs are struggling to provide services to the students. Most VCs are struggling to run their institutions without government funds,” he stated.
