The academic community at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has been thrown into mourning following the passing of Professor Ladi Sandra Adamu, a trailblazer in the field of Mass Communication and the first female professor of broadcasting in Northern Nigeria. She died at the age of 67 after a prolonged and courageous battle with breast cancer.
The sad news was confirmed by Associate Professor Muhammad Hashim Suleiman, a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication at ABU, who announced her death on his official Facebook page. He described Professor Adamu as “a passionate teacher, a guiding light, and a mother to many students who passed through the department.”
Until her death, Professor Adamu was celebrated for her pioneering contributions to media education, journalism practice, and the advancement of women in communication across Nigeria. Over the decades, she mentored hundreds of students, many of whom have gone on to occupy key positions in broadcasting, academia, and public service.
Born on January 17, 1958, in Plateau State, Ladi Adamu obtained her first degree in Mass Communication before proceeding for her postgraduate studies, specializing in broadcast journalism. Her exceptional commitment to research and her advocacy for gender representation in media earned her both national and international recognition.
Colleagues and students have continued to pay tribute to her legacy, describing her as a visionary educator whose impact extended far beyond the classroom. Many recall her dedication to nurturing confidence and professionalism in young journalists, particularly women seeking a voice in the male-dominated media industry.
Her death is regarded as a significant loss to the Nigerian academic community, especially to the Department of Mass Communication at ABU, where she served for decades as a lecturer, researcher, and mentor.
