Cambridge Dictionary Adds TikTok Slang Like ‘Skibidi’ and ‘Delulu’

The Cambridge Dictionary has added 6,000 new words—many inspired by TikTok slang and Gen Z internet culture—including terms like “skibidi,” “delulu,” “rizz,” and “girl dinner,” reflecting the growing influence of digital communities on modern English.

The Cambridge Dictionary has expanded its online edition with 6,000 new entries, many of which reflect the fast-evolving digital language shaped by TikTok trends, memes, internet communities, and Gen Z pop culture. Among the standout additions are “skibidi,” a bizarre and intentionally nonsensical term made popular by the surreal Skibidi Toilet YouTube series, and “delulu,” a humorous shorthand for “delusional,” often used to describe overly confident, fantasy-driven thinking, particularly in stan culture or wishful dating scenarios.

Also included are widely used terms like “rizz” (short for charisma or seductive charm, especially in romantic interactions), “tradwife” (a woman who embraces traditional gender roles and homemaking), and “beige flag” (a trait in a romantic partner that is odd but not necessarily a dealbreaker). Other slang entries like “girl dinner” (a curated, often low-effort snack plate typically favored by women), “NPC” (short for “non-playable character,” used to describe someone perceived as robotic or lacking individuality), and “situationship” (a romantic or sexual relationship that lacks clear boundaries or commitment) reflect how casual online discourse is increasingly shaping formal linguistic norms.

Even more additions include “gyatt” (a slang exclamation in reaction to someone’s appearance, particularly curves), “canon event” (a significant or inevitable life experience one must go through, often painful or transformative), and “mid” (used to label something as mediocre or underwhelming). These terms, once confined to TikTok comments and viral videos, now appear in a respected reference source—highlighting the fluid boundaries between pop culture, humor, and institutionalized language.

This wave of updates underscores how the digital era is redefining not just how we communicate, but whose voices shape the evolution of language—cementing Gen Z as a powerful linguistic force in the modern lexicon.
