A Nigerian NYSC corper, Mamappruim, went viral after receiving ₦5,000 and a bottle of water on her first day at her PPA in Abuja, simply because her boss was impressed she studied Insurance Science.

A young Nigerian woman serving in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), known on TikTok as Mamappruim, has become an online sensation after sharing a surprising and heartwarming experience from her first day at her Place of Primary Assignment (PPA) in Abuja.
In a now-viral TikTok video, Mamappruim revealed that upon arriving at her PPA, her superior was not only pleased with her presence but genuinely impressed by her academic discipline — Insurance Science, a course not often celebrated or widely understood in Nigeria.
As a result of this unexpected admiration, she was gifted a bottle of water and a ₦5,000 cash tip right on her first day. In the video, she holds up the cash and water with a proud smile, clearly amused and touched by the gesture.
“First day @ my PPA, my boss was impressed with the course I read in the university and I was given bottle water and 5k tip,” she wrote in the caption.
The gesture left her feeling both encouraged and hopeful. In a playful tone, she remarked that for the first time in a long while, she felt truly proud of her field of study — a sentiment not always common among Nigerian graduates, especially in lesser-hyped courses.
“I felt so proud of my course, for the first time in a while. But I hope say na everyday una go dey give me this tip make I dey use am see front for this Abuja 😂😂😂… NYSC una do me this one,” she added, blending humor with gratitude.
Her lighthearted video quickly captured the attention of fellow corps members and Nigerians online, many of whom applauded the rare recognition given to a course like Insurance. The post sparked a broader conversation around how academic choices are valued in different workplaces, with several users sharing their own NYSC experiences — some funny, others less flattering.
Some netizens jokingly commented that they might have chosen the wrong course of study, while others praised the boss for motivating and encouraging the young corper in such a simple but impactful way.
The NYSC program, which places Nigerian graduates in various public and private institutions across the country for a year of national service, is often met with mixed reviews. Many participants complain about neglect, underpayment, or even hostile treatment at their PPAs. However, Mamappruim’s experience offers a refreshing reminder that a little appreciation can go a long way in boosting morale.
Whether this act of kindness continues daily remains to be seen, but for now, it has earned Mamappruim a moment in the spotlight — and a newfound pride in a course many might have overlooked.
