Abuja Pupils Stage Protest Over Prolonged Teachers’ Strike Amid Minimum Wage Dispute.

Primary school pupils in Abuja staged a protest led by activist VeryDarkMan over the ongoing 86-day teachers’ strike caused by the government’s failure to implement the new N70,000 minimum wage and pay salary arrears, which has kept FCT public schools shut since March.

Primary school pupils in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) staged a peaceful protest outside the office of the FCT Minister on Monday, voicing their frustrations over the continued closure of public schools due to an unresolved teachers’ strike.

The strike, now in its third month, began on March 24, 2025, and has seen all public primary schools in the FCT remain shut. The teachers are demanding the implementation of the new N70,000 minimum wage and the settlement of longstanding salary arrears by the Area Councils.

Leading the protest was popular social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, who assembled children in their school uniforms at the Minister’s gate. In a symbolic gesture, Otse held an impromptu outdoor class to underscore the children’s plight and the disruption of their education.

“These children are the victims. They missed their last term exams and remain locked out of school because the teachers have not been paid. I brought them here to make a point — this is now their classroom,” Otse stated.

He criticized the government’s delay in resolving the wage issues and pointed out that many government officials send their children to private or foreign schools, making them disconnected from the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.

“This is not the Nigeria President Tinubu promised. If we keep calling these kids the leaders of tomorrow, how will they lead without education?” Otse asked.

The protest drew attention from passersby and highlighted growing public concern over the deteriorating state of basic education in the capital.

As of today, the strike has entered its 86th day, with no resolution in sight. Parents and pupils are pleading with the authorities to address the teachers’ demands and reopen schools immediately.
