AKSU sacks 14 Lecturers over sexual abuse

Akwa Ibom State University, Ikot Akpaden in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of the State, has said it sacked about 14 lecturers for engaging in sexual molestation and abuse of female students in the university.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nse Essien, disclosed this on Thursday at the press centre of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Information Drive Uyo, the state capital, during a familiarisation visit to the council.

Essien, who did not mention the names of the sacked lecturers, said the University would not relent in flushing out the bag eggs even as it is determined to create a healthy academic environment devoid of molestation and intimidation.

The Professor also spoke on the activities of the institution and his achievements for the period of one year in office, saying, “Thirty-eight, out of the 42 programmes run by the university have received full accreditation by the National University Commission (NUC).

“We are putting all efforts to ensure that the remaining courses also get full accreditation. We have also ensured that the Radio broadcasting by the University would commence soon.”

He further noted that the university unbundled its Mass Communication programme in line with the emerging trend and communication needs of modern society, resulting in the creation of departments of Public Relations, Advertising, Broadcasting and Journalism and Media Studies.

In his remarks, the NUJ chairman, Comrade Amos Etuk, commended the vice chancellor for coming to share his thoughts with journalists and assured him that the new partnership, when under effect, will add value to the rating and standing of the institution.

Comrade Etuk added, “I want you to use the occasion of your first anniversary in office to showcase the development in AKSU, under your watch.”

The vice chancellor was accompanied on the visit by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic, Prof. Umoren Umoren, and the head of the Directorate of Information, Public Relations and Protocol, Mr. Akaninyene Ibanga.
