Anambra Govt Closes School After Teacher Beats Pupil into Coma

The Anambra State government has permanently shut down Landmark School Mgbakwu in Anambra state after a teacher beat an eight-year-old pupil into coma.

The Anambra State government has permanently shut down Landmark School Mgbakwu in Awka North Local Government Area after a pupil was beaten into a coma.

Faith Nwonye, a 30-year-old teacher at the school, reportedly brutalized an eight-year-old pupil and another student.

Education Commissioner Ngozi Chuma-Udeh announced the closure, explaining that it was due to both the severe incident and the school’s illegal operation.

Chuma-Udeh stated that she had summoned the school’s proprietor and Nwonye to explain the brutalization of the primary two pupils.

“We received this unfortunate report from an illegal school in Mgbakwu where a child was beaten into a coma over the weekend. The State Government has summoned the proprietress and the teacher involved,” Chuma-Udeh said.

The case has been handed over to the police for further investigation, and the commissioner noted that running an unapproved school in Anambra is a criminal offense.

“The matter has been referred to the police, and we are awaiting directives from the Governor. Meanwhile, the school is indefinitely closed because it should not have been operating. Parents enrolling their children in illegal schools do so at their own risk.

“Running an unapproved school in Anambra is a criminal act,” Chuma-Udeh emphasized.

The commissioner also mentioned that the pupil’s chances of survival are slim, according to medical reports.

“Regardless of the school’s legal status, it is criminal to beat a child. The doctor has indicated that the child’s chances of survival are 20%,” she lamented.

Chuma-Udeh added that if the teacher is found guilty after the investigation, she will face legal consequences.
