A 30-year-old teacher at Landmark School Mgbakwu in Anambra State’s Awka North Local Government Area, Faith Nwonye, has been arrested for allegedly beating an eight-year-old pupil into a coma.
Commissioner for Education, Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, informed journalists on Monday that the state government has permanently shut down the school.

Chuma-Udeh stated that she summoned the school’s proprietor and Nwonye to explain the incident involving the brutalization of the primary two pupil.
She further explained that the school was closed not only due to the incident but also because it was operating illegally.
“We received this unfortunate report from an illegal school in Mgbakwu where a child was beaten into a coma over the weekend. The State Government has summoned the proprietress of the illegal school and the teacher involved,” said Chuma-Udeh.
“We have referred the matter to the police for further investigation and are awaiting directives from the Governor. The school has been indefinitely shut down because it should not have been operating in the first place. Parents enrolling their children in illegal schools do so at their own risk.
“To private school proprietors, running an unapproved school in Anambra is a criminal offense.”
Chuma-Udeh expressed sadness over the situation, noting that the child, currently hospitalized, has only a 20% chance of survival according to the medical doctor.
“Regardless of the school’s status, it is criminal to beat a child. The child’s chances of survival are 20%,” she added.
She warned that such perpetrators will be held accountable, and that the teacher would face legal consequences.
“Once the police conclude their investigation, the teacher will face additional charges under child rights laws. She will face the full extent of the law for her actions.
“Anambra state strictly opposes violence against children, women, or anyone else. This administration and the Governor are firmly against such acts.”
