Margaret Lawrence University has banned smartphones on campus, joining Covenant University and Bingham University in enforcing strict rules to reduce distractions and improve students’ academic focus, though the move has sparked mixed reactions.

A new private institution, Margaret Lawrence University, has announced a ban on smartphone use within its campus, aiming to improve students’ concentration and academic performance.
The Vice-Chancellor, Ernest Izevbigie, revealed that any student caught using a smartphone for the first time could face a two-week suspension, while repeat offenders would receive stricter punishments.
He explained that smartphones can be a major source of distraction, and the school wants students to stay focused on their studies. However, students are still allowed to use basic mobile phones strictly for calls and text messages.
The announcement was made during the university’s third matriculation ceremony for the 2025/2026 academic session, held physically in Abuja, while students at the Delta campus joined virtually.
This decision follows a similar policy by Covenant University, which also restricted mobile phone usage and introduced rules to create a more disciplined and distraction-free learning environment.
In addition, other institutions like Bingham University have implemented similar bans, citing misuse of smartphones by students as the reason.
Beyond universities, some state governments have also taken action, such as in Anambra State, where secondary school students are prohibited from bringing mobile phones to school, with authorities empowered to confiscate them.
