“ASUU Strike Forced Me To Hunt For Husband” – 20yrs Old Female Student Laments

A 20-year-old female student of Gombe State University (GSU) identified as Maryam Adamu, has lamented that the ongoing strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has forced her into urgent search for a husband.

The 200-level student of Public Administration at GSU, explained in an interview in Gombe that the strike has messed up her plan and wish of graduating before the age of 20 and that the continued strike and her staying at home have slowly killed her spirit of studying before marriage.

“I cannot take it anymore, our continued staying at home following the shutting down of academic activities since February is not going down well on us, many of us have lost the spirit, as I speak now, if I am to be asked to choose between going back to school and marriage, I would put marriage first,” said the student who further disclosed that she had been carried away by studies and never thought of marrying before graduation.

“This strike has forced me into an urgent search for a husband because that is what I could think of while staying at home with no assignments and studies to keep me busy, most of my friends who had married earlier when marriage was a no-go area for me are today nursing their one or two children and am in a way jealous,” she said.

ASUU and the government can continue with their games, all I care about and am worrying me now is to get married so that I will not fall into things I will end up regretting because I don’t even know what I will be going back to do if schools are to be reopened today, they have killed the vibe in me and so many of school friends, my parents have now picked interest in marrying me out,” she added.

ASUU Strike: Idle Varsity Students Share Experiences

However, from the sublime to the ridiculous, the idle students are now engaged in various activities to while away the time.

If you hear them saying they want to cruise, they are not going for a boat/ship ride, but to indulge in drinking, betting, social media activities including internet fraud etc. That is mainly done by the boys.

Their female counterparts are not fishermen, but when they talk about hook up, they are not trying to take a hook to catch a fish, but to find a man to spend the night with for an agreed fee.

Some are, however, engaged in farming, teaching, learning a trade, or just sleeping and waking and putting pressure on the food items in the family’s store.

Sunday Vanguard went to town to sample opinions of some of these young men and women, the answers are very revealing.

Agofure Erhimena, a student of one of the federal universities, resident in Delta State, said: “As a student and a youth in Nigeria, having an efficient plan laid out for your youthful years is as important as living itself, but due to the recurrence of strikes by the controlling body of universities in Nigeria, ASUU, the timeline does not check out anymore.

“The time wasted has put me behind schedule in everything. Trying to secure a job entails a degree at the very least which is not available yet, not to talk of rolling over the strike for 12 more weeks makes it totally unbearable.

“It gives a sensation of no bearing just having to stay around every day doing absolutely nothing and, if this goes on, it endangers the future of the youths of this country who are not privileged enough to have other things to go into aside school.”
