ASUU strike: University official commits suicide over hardship

DAILY POST gathered that the deceased was working as a data entry staff in the institution but became limited financially following the strike action by the academic and non-academic unions in Universities.

The federal government had earlier said that they will not pay university staff until that strike has been called off.

It is reported that the deceased had lamented about his financial struggles, telling how he couldn’t pay his daughter’s school fees and offset some other bills.

It is gatherd that the deceased had seeking for help from his neighbor, before taking his own life.

Confirming the incident, the Edo State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Chidi Nwanbuzor, said, although the command is aware of the unfortunate incident, it is yet to officially receive the report.

“Yes, the command happens to be aware of it by following up events and processes in the state, not that the family of the man who committed suicide reported it officially.”

“The case remains unreported to date but we are aware of it because of our interest in following event in the state,” the PPRO told Daily Trust.

DAILY POST reports that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU had on February 14, shut down all public universities.

The Non-academic Staff Union of Universities has also been on strike for several months now.
