Yobe State University clarifies viral photo of students sleeping outside

Yobe State University said the viral image of students sleeping outside is due to temporary hostel renovations and hot weather—not a widespread accommodation crisis—and assured that arrangements are being made to house all affected students.

The management of Yobe State University has responded to a widely shared photo showing some students sleeping outdoors on campus, explaining that the situation is temporary and not due to a general shortage of accommodation.

According to a statement shared by Hon. Yusuf Ali, the Digital and Strategic Communications focal person to Governor Mai Mala Buni, the image is genuine but has been misinterpreted.

He explained that several student hostels are currently undergoing renovation and upgrades as part of efforts to improve living conditions. This has temporarily reduced the number of available bed spaces on campus.

In addition, the hot weather has led some students to choose to sleep outside at night for comfort, rather than remain indoors.

The Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Sani Isa, confirmed that hostel allocation is ongoing and that steps are being taken to ensure affected students are accommodated as quickly as possible. Measures are also in place to reduce overcrowding in high-demand hostels, including the Abuja Hostel.

The university assured students, parents, and the public that the situation is under control and that no student has been neglected. Management emphasized its commitment to student welfare, safety, and academic success.

The institution also urged the public to ignore misleading interpretations of the viral photo and rely on official sources for accurate information.
