Brilliant African scholar James Azam has earned a PhD in Applied Mathematics from Stellenbosch University, after an inspiring academic journey through multiple degrees, with a focus on infectious disease modeling to aid global public health decision-making.

James Azam, a determined African scholar, has earned a PhD in Applied Mathematics from Stellenbosch University in South Africa, marking a major academic achievement.
His journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana. He later pursued two Master’s degrees—one in Mathematics from the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), and another from Stellenbosch University—before embarking on his PhD at the same institution.
His doctoral dissertation, titled “Modelling Outbreak Response Interventions for Decision-Making,” focuses on infectious disease modeling—an area of growing global importance, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Reflecting on his work, James stated, “Now more than ever, the application of mathematics and statistics to real-life issues has become one of the most sought-after skills.”
He expressed gratitude to God for His guidance, thanked his supervisors, and acknowledged the support of SACEMA (South African Centre for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis) which funded his research.
James also credited his family and friends for their support and shared his aspirations to contribute meaningfully to public health policy, outbreak response, and data-driven decision-making on a global scale.
