Obabiolorunkosi Adegbesan, a Nigerian scholar, graduated with first-class honors in Zoology from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, achieving an impressive 4.70 out of a possible 5.00 GPA and earning the award for the best graduating student in his department.
Adegbesan shared his academic journey on LinkedIn, expressing pride in his consistent academic excellence, which had seen him lead his classes from primary through secondary school. He explained to Medium that, even if he hadn’t achieved a first-class degree, he was confident he would have still earned a high grade, attributing his success to significant personal sacrifices.
To focus on his studies, Adegbesan adjusted his routine, including attending church services online rather than in person, and spending extensive hours in the departmental library, often reading at night when most of his peers studied during the day.
In recognition of his academic achievements, Adegbesan received Professor S. O. Asaolu’s annual prize for the highest cumulative grade points in his department and won the OAU Star Award, a prestigious new honor. Despite his demanding academic schedule, Adegbesan also found time for student politics and music, serving as the Academic Director of the Nigerian Association of Science Students, OAU chapter.
Maintaining a perfect 5.0 GPA from his third year through graduation, Adegbesan credited his success to the unwavering support of his friends and family, who respected his dedication to his studies and minimized distractions.
“They knew me for my books,” he said, reflecting on the role his support system played in his academic achievements.
