Taraba State residents and stakeholders have expressed overwhelming support and excitement as a bill to establish the University of Tropical Agriculture and Climate Action in Gembu advances in the State Assembly, promising to boost agricultural innovation, climate resilience, and regional development.
Public Cheers as Varsity Proposal Advances in Assembly
Taraba State witnessed widespread excitement following a public hearing on a bill seeking to establish the University of Tropical Agriculture and Climate Action on the Mambilla Plateau. The hearing, held in Jalingo, drew a large turnout and signaled strong momentum as the bill passed its second reading in the Taraba State House of Assembly.
The proposed university would be sited in Gembu, the headquarters of Sardauna Local Government Area. If enacted, the institution aims to lead in agricultural innovation, climate adaptation, and regional economic growth.
Widespread Support from Stakeholders
Voices from across sectors—government, academia, civil society, and professional groups—united to endorse the initiative.
Barr. Gebon Kataps, Secretary to the State Government, hailed the proposal as a visionary step:
“This university will address food security, empower our youth, and fuel economic development. We commend the foresight behind this bill.”
Others emphasized the strategic value of the Mambilla Plateau, known for its rich soil and favorable climate, as a natural home for an institution focused on tropical agriculture and climate solutions.
A Step Toward Regional Equity
Participants also highlighted the historical marginalization of the area since the 1961 plebiscite. The university, they argued, would help address long-standing disparities.
Calls were made for the state to ensure robust funding, infrastructure, and for the host community to contribute land and support services.
Lawmakers Show United Front
The bill is championed by three lawmakers from the region:
- Abel Peter Diah (Mbamnga Constituency), former Speaker of the House
- Nelson C. Len (Nguroje Constituency)
- Abdulazeez Titon (Gembu Constituency)
Diah stated:
“This isn’t just a Sardauna project—it’s a Taraba project. Our future depends on agricultural innovation and climate resilience.”
