Corps Member Decries 122-Day NYSC Extension Without Pay Over Missed Biometrics

A female NYSC member, identified as @toffy_gee on TikTok, went viral after revealing her service was extended by 122 days without pay due to missed biometric verifications, sparking public debate over the fairness and rigidity of NYSC’s disciplinary policies.

A female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has taken to social media to express her disappointment after receiving a letter from the NYSC extending her service by 122 days without financial compensation.

Posting under the TikTok username @toffy_gee, she shared a video that included footage of the official letter from the NYSC. According to the letter, her service year was extended due to an absence totaling 61 days, reportedly because she missed multiple biometric verification sessions — a mandatory process for all corps members to track attendance and participation in the program.

In the video’s comment section, she clarified that her failure to complete the biometric check-ins was not intentional and may have been due to unforeseen circumstances. Despite her explanation, the NYSC policy dictated an extension without pay, as missed biometrics are treated as absence from duty.

The video quickly went viral, drawing widespread attention and sparking debate among current and former corps members. Many users shared their own stories of harsh penalties for missed verifications, with some noting inconsistencies in how NYSC enforces extensions.

The situation has once again brought the NYSC’s biometric system and disciplinary procedures under scrutiny, with many calling for a more compassionate and transparent approach—especially in cases involving personal hardship or technical issues.

This incident also highlights the emotional and financial strain corps members face when service is unexpectedly prolonged, particularly without support or compensation.
