A Rivers State High Court adjourned until May 26, 2026, the trial of a school proprietor and four staff members accused of negligence over the death of two-year-old Winnie Akekue at Wisdom Gate School in Port Harcourt.

A High Court in Rivers State has postponed proceedings in the case involving the proprietor of Wisdom Gate School and four members of the school’s management over the death of a two-year-old pupil, Winnie Akekue.
The case, which is being heard in Port Harcourt, was adjourned until May 26, 2026, to allow the accused persons formally enter their plea. The defendants are connected to the Eligbolo branch of Wisdom Gate School, where the tragic incident reportedly occurred.
The school proprietor and staff members are facing allegations of negligence linked to the death of the toddler, who allegedly died after a shelf collapsed on her within the school premises in March.
During Tuesday’s court session, the lawyer representing the defendants informed the court that the Rivers State Ministry of Justice had not yet provided his clients with the necessary legal documents related to the case. He therefore requested more time to enable proper service of the court processes.
After hearing the application, the presiding judge, Justice Monima Danagogo, ordered the prosecution to ensure that all relevant documents are served on the defence before the next hearing date.
The judge also ruled that the administrative bail earlier granted to the defendants by the Nigeria Police should remain valid pending further proceedings.
Additionally, the court directed that the surety representing the accused persons must continue appearing in court until the plea process is concluded.
Following the child’s death earlier this year, the Rivers State Government temporarily shut down the Eligbolo campus of Wisdom Gate School while investigations into the incident continued.
