Maureen Okam-Achebe, daughter of renowned novelist Chinua Achebe, has been honored with a prestigious faculty award at Harvard Medical School for her exceptional contributions to medicine, education, and community service.

Maureen Okam-Achebe, daughter of the late renowned Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe, has been recognized with a prestigious faculty award at Harvard Medical School. She was honored with the Brigham and Women’s Hospital 2024 Faculty Development and Diversity Award in Massachusetts, USA.

According to an announcement shared by her brother, the award celebrates outstanding contributions in academic pillars such as clinical care, research, education, and community engagement. The recognition affirms Maureen’s significant role in advancing medical excellence and diversity.

Maureen began her academic journey in Nigeria, earning her medical degree from the University of Port Harcourt. She later trained in hematology and medical oncology at Yale School of Medicine, before obtaining a master’s degree in public health from Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

She currently holds multiple leadership roles: Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School, Director of the Outpatient Infusion Center and the Non-Malignant Hematology Clinic at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, as well as Director of the hospital’s Sickle Cell Program. Her achievements reflect a lifelong commitment to medicine, education, and the betterment of underrepresented communities in healthcare.
