Final-Year Student Allegedly Commits Suicide After Failing Course; Mother Blames Lecturer

A final-year student at Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, named Favour Ugwuka, has allegedly committed suicide for repeatedly failing a course.

A final-year student at Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, named Favour Ugwuka, has allegedly committed suicide.

Favour was found dead behind her hostel at the Ishieke Campus on Wednesday, May 22, 2024. Reports suggest she ingested a poisonous substance suspected to be sniper.

According to Punch, Favour, a student in the Department of English, had successfully passed all her courses except one, which she repeatedly failed. The lecturer of this course had allegedly vowed she would never pass.

A video seen online shows Favour’s mother blaming the lecturer for her daughter’s death.

“Dr. Enyi said he is the best, that nobody can teach like him. He should come and carry my daughter who has committed suicide,” she lamented.

Rex Nwome, a graduate from the institution and a close friend of Favour, claimed the repeated failure of the course led to her suicide.

“Favour was my classmate and best friend. The lecturer had vowed never to allow Favour to graduate,” he said. “She passed all her courses except for that lecturer’s, which forced her to pay for an additional year. When the NYSC names were recently shortlisted, and her name wasn’t there, it resulted in intense depression.”

Nwome added, “She was very desperate to graduate and serve. This and many more distressing issues led to her suicide. I wish she didn’t go this far. Rest in peace, Ugwuka Favour.”

The State Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the incident, stating, “Yes, the command received the report of suicide by a female student.”
