Osamagbe Jegede, a student of Baptist High School, Benin, emerged as the overall best student in the 2025 NDDC AGEMS competition, winning multiple prizes for her excellence in STEM and representing Edo State in the Niger Delta-wide contest.

Osamagbe Jegede, a Senior Secondary School (SSS III) student of Baptist High School, Benin, Edo State, has emerged as the overall best student in the 2025 Advanced Girls in Engineering, Mathematics, and Science (AGEMS) competition in Nigeria.
Jegede was honored with an award for academic excellence, receiving laptops, educational tablets, storage boxes, and an undisclosed cash prize in recognition of her victory. The competition, organized by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), aims to bridge the gender gap in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education for girls in the Niger Delta region.
During a celebratory event in Benin, Mrs. Mercy Babawale, NDDC’s State Director, highlighted the organization’s dedication to fostering female leadership in science and engineering through innovation and technology.
“This year’s AGEMS competition was part of our International Women’s Day celebrations. The event, held in Port Harcourt, saw Jegede representing Edo State and emerging as the best in the entire Niger Delta,” Babawale stated.
She explained that the competition comprised three stages, beginning with a Computer-Based Test (CBT) involving ten selected schools from Edo State. Jegede’s outstanding performance secured her a spot in the final round, where she claimed first place.
Babawale emphasized that Jegede’s achievement is proof that young women can excel in STEM when given the right opportunities. She also announced that the NDDC would distribute U-Lesson tablets to outstanding students and install solar panels at Baptist High School to enhance learning.
Expressing gratitude, she commended the school’s management, science teachers, and Jegede’s mother, Mrs. Abieyuwa Jegede, for their role in shaping the young scholar’s academic journey.
Prof. Joel Agbolagba, Chairman of the Governing Board of Baptist High School, lauded the NDDC’s efforts in promoting STEM education for girls, while PTA Chairman Kunle Oladokun encouraged students to embrace science and technology, emphasizing their significance in shaping the future.
The AGEMS competition, held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was part of the 2025 International Women’s Day celebrations, reinforcing the commitment to empowering young girls in STEM across the Niger Delta.
