Exceptional Girl Sets Record as First Black Valedictorian in US High School

Cursory: Trinity Asberry, a graduate of Rusk High School in Texas, USA, made history by becoming the school’s first Black valedictorian in over two decades. She worked diligently to achieve this honor, which was a significant milestone for both her and her family. Trinity aspires to pursue a nursing career, starting with a pre-nursing program at Texas Southern University.

An accomplished young woman named Trinity Asberry has shattered a two-decade-old record at Rusk High School in Texas, United States, by becoming the school’s first-ever black valedictorian.

Trinity proudly graduated from Rusk High School, having diligently pursued academic excellence to secure the top position in her graduating class.

Her remarkable achievement not only fulfilled her personal goal but also etched her name in history as the first Black student to earn the valedictorian title in the school’s lengthy history.

Upon learning of her accomplishment, Trinity immediately shared the exciting news with her family. Her grandmother, who had been part of the community for a long time, expressed surprise and suggested that Trinity might have made history with her achievement.

In her words:

“The first thing I did when I found out is I called all my family members, ‘Hey I’m valedictorian!’ My grandma told me, ‘Hey I think you might have made history, I’ve been here a long time and I’ve never heard that happen,’’ she said.

Upon discovering her historic achievement, Trinity took it upon herself to delve into the history of Rusk High School, the sole high school within the Rusk Independent School District. However, her attempts to verify her suspicions by consulting with the school’s faculty and local newspapers proved futile.

Trinity and her supporters extended their search for confirmation to organizations like the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) but were unable to unearth the required information.

To finally confirm her unique status, they conducted extensive research involving community members and alumni of Rusk High School.

“They didn’t have the resources to tell me that information. So we checked with the NAACP and they couldn’t find that information as well so we did a lot of research with community members and alumni from Rush HS,” she explained.

Trinity said it actually took a bit of digging but she was able to confirm with the Board of Educators and other sources that she was in fact, the first Black valedictorian at Rush High School.

Trinity’s father, George Andrew Asberry, said he was very excited about his daughter’s achievement. “That feeling was like wow you’re special, I mean you’re the first in Rusk…that’s history. I’m so proud of her and I probably tell her a hundred times,” she said.George said a lot of his daughter’s motivation comes from her late mother, who passed when Trinity was just in elementary school.

He added that her mother set the foundation and when she passed, he did his best to maintain it. “When Trinity lost her mom, I thought that the best thing I could do was make her situation comfortable and that’s what I did. I made her first priority, I put my personal life in the back burner and made sure she had everything she needed. She had me, her grandmother, her aunt, and her teachers – all of those people were instrumental for helping her to get where she is,” he said.

Trinity has articulated her educational aspirations, revealing her intention to commence her academic journey at Texas Southern University by enrolling in their pre-nursing program.

She aspires to subsequently transfer to the University of Houston in the United States, where, after a two-year period, she intends to fulfill her ambition of earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
