Hijab-Wearing Candidate Denied Entry at JAMB Centre Sparks Online Debate

A hijab-wearing candidate was denied entry into a Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) exam centre, sparking mixed reactions online over concerns about religious rights and exam security.

A trending incident on social media has stirred widespread reactions after a female candidate wearing a hijab was reportedly prevented from entering her examination centre during the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) CBT exam.

In the footage, the young woman is seen standing in line alongside other candidates waiting to sit for the exam. However, when it was her turn to be cleared for entry, a security official allegedly instructed her to remove her hijab before she could proceed into the exam hall.

Visibly upset by the directive, the candidate turned away from the entrance. Another officer at the scene was also seen reinforcing the instruction, insisting that she must take off the hijab before being allowed to enter and write her examination.

The incident has since triggered intense discussions online, with many Nigerians expressing divided opinions over the situation.

Some social media users condemned the action, describing it as discriminatory and a violation of religious freedom. One commenter, Naziru Umar, argued that preventing a Muslim woman from wearing her hijab during an exam undermines her constitutional right to practice her religion and called for equal treatment and respect.

On the other hand, some individuals supported the enforcement, claiming it could be a preventive measure against examination malpractice. A user identified as Congresswoman suggested that items like hijabs or veils might be misused to conceal unauthorized materials, adding that such coverings should be restricted in examination halls.

Others reacted with sarcasm and humor, while some maintained that denying the candidate access based on her dressing was unfair and unjustified.

Overall, the incident has reignited conversations about the balance between security measures in examination centres and the protection of individuals’ religious rights in Nigeria.
