Imo State Tertiary Institution Students Takes to Street to Protest Tuitions, Poor standard

Cursory: Students from Imo State tertiary institutions protested in Owerri against high living costs, excessive fees, poor education quality, inadequate infrastructure, and widespread extortion. See full details below…

Students in Imo State tertiary institutions have taken to the streets in protest against various grievances including high living costs, exorbitant fees, substandard education, inadequate infrastructure, and pervasive extortion and intimidation.

Appealing to both the Federal and State Governments, the students demanded an end to the frequent tuition fee hikes and the extortionate practices such as compulsory handouts and textbooks. They called for the improvement of learning environments, installation of essential facilities like electricity and boreholes, and enhancement of educational standards and moral values.

The peaceful protest, which saw participation from students of institutions including Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Imo State University Owerri (IMSU), Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education Owerri, Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri, and Imo State University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (UAES), Umuagwo, Ohaji, took place in Owerri.

Carrying placards with various messages, the students also decried the exorbitant accommodation fees and overall hardship in Imo State, which they attributed to what they deemed as the government’s flawed economic policies, deficient infrastructure, and high unemployment rates.

In response to the protest, Valentine Nzubechi, the Vice President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), assured the students that both the Federal and State governments would address their concerns to enhance the quality of education. He specifically mentioned Governor Hope Uzodimma, a NANS Patron, “will listen to your plights, hence you should calm down.”

Additionally, Nzubechi affirmed that President Bola Tinubu would also address the issues raised by the students, considering their shared commitment to education and belief in the potential of youth as future leaders.

In his words:

“Also, we are sure that President Bola Tinubu will address these issues you raised because they are lovers of education who believe that youths are great assets and future leaders.”
