In Photos: Disturbing Condition of Abuja School with Crumbling Walls and Failing Structures

A civil society group has condemned the dangerous condition of Junior Secondary School Kilankwa 2 in Abuja—marked by cracked walls and failing beams—as a “death trap,” questioning the FCT Minister’s claim of renovating over 60 schools and demanding urgent government intervention.

The Junior Secondary School Kilankwa 2, located in the Kwali Area Council of Abuja, is in a critical state of disrepair, endangering both students and teachers.

A recent visit by the civil society organisation MonITNG revealed shocking structural failures. In a post shared on social media, the group described the school as a “death trap” due to extensive wall cracks and weakened support beams that could collapse at any moment.

“We visited Junior Secondary School Kilankwa 2 in Kwali Area Council, Abuja, and what we saw was horrifying. The building is a death trap—cracked walls, weak structural beams—danger looms over students and teachers every day,” the group wrote.

Despite the imminent danger, classes are still being held in the facility, forcing students to learn under unsafe conditions.

The report raises questions about recent claims by Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, who stated that over 60 schools had been renovated and equipped across the region. MonITNG challenged this assertion, asking why Kilankwa 2 was overlooked.

“If that’s true, why was Kilankwa 2 excluded? This is a glaring example of misplaced priorities. Billions are being spent on flashy projects, while our children are left to study in ruins. It’s disgraceful.”

The group urged the FCT Minister, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), and the Ministry of Education to explain the continued neglect of the school.

“We call on @GovWike, @OfficialFCTA, and @NigEducation to clarify: Where are these 60 schools? Why isn’t Kilankwa 2 among them? Children’s lives should come before political optics. They deserve safe, dignified spaces to learn. #FixPublicSchools”
