Inspired by Injury: Young Athlete Turns Knee Setback into Medical Career

A devastating knee injury that nearly cost him his leg inspired former Duke athlete JR Smith to pursue medicine, overcoming academic hurdles to become an orthopedic surgery resident at Mayo Clinic and a mentor for aspiring doctors.

A young athlete’s life took an unexpected turn when a severe knee injury led him to discover his true calling. Dr. JR Smith, a track and field athlete at Duke University, suffered a knee dislocation in 2015 that nearly resulted in amputation. The long recovery process introduced him to the world of orthopedic surgery, and he was inspired by his surgeon’s expertise and care.

Smith’s journey is a testament to resilience and determination. Despite facing academic challenges, including a low GPA and taking the MCAT twice, he persevered and applied to medical school. He was accepted into the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine and graduated with a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in 2024.

From Patient to Doctor

Smith’s experience as a patient sparked a passion for helping others regain control of their lives. He began documenting his journey on YouTube, sharing strategies for aspiring medical students. His channel, “Evolving Medic,” aims to inspire and guide future doctors, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds.

Breaking Barriers

Smith noticed a disturbing trend: fewer Black men are applying to medical school today than in the 1970s. Determined to change this narrative, he uses his platform to promote diversity and inclusion in medicine.

A New Chapter

Smith has begun his orthopedic surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic School of Biomedical Sciences, completing a full-circle journey from patient to doctor. He remains committed to mentorship and education, inspiring others to pursue careers in medicine.

Inspiring Others

Smith’s story serves as a reminder that setbacks can become purpose. His determination and resilience are an inspiration to aspiring medical students and professionals worldwide.
