Adedeji Ayomide Samuel, a FUOYE graduate, overcame significant personal and financial challenges to earn a First Class Degree in Mathematics with a CGPA of 4.68 and secure a prestigious internship funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to combat public health issues through data-driven solutions.

Adedeji Ayomide Samuel, a graduate of the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), has achieved an exceptional milestone by earning a First Class Degree in Mathematics with a CGPA of 4.68. Despite financial and personal challenges, he persevered to become one of the top three students in his department and was selected for a prestigious internship with the International Centre for Applied Mathematical Modeling and Data Analytics (ICAMMDA), funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Samuel’s journey was far from smooth. He sat for JAMB three times before gaining admission to FUOYE and lost his father just months before starting university. These hardships, coupled with financial struggles, led to an initial CGPA of 3.7 in his first semester. Adjusting to his new environment while juggling tuition and rent payments posed significant challenges.
To support himself, Samuel took on various menial jobs and adopted rigorous study habits, including night reading, group study sessions with like-minded peers, and a relentless focus on academic improvement. His efforts paid off, as he consistently climbed the academic ladder to graduate with honors.
Samuel’s academic excellence earned him a spot in the ICAMMDA program, where he focuses on using mathematical modeling and data analysis to tackle public health issues, particularly malaria. His recent research examined the impact of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLIN) on malaria transmission dynamics in Kebbi State, inspiring him to pursue data-driven solutions for infectious diseases.
Looking ahead, Samuel aspires to leverage his expertise to combat malaria in Nigeria, address real-world public health challenges, and inspire positive change in his community.
Samuel encourages students to remain focused and resilient despite the challenges of Nigeria’s academic environment. “Work hard, manage your time effectively, and utilize available resources such as past questions, online materials, and study groups,” he advises. He also emphasizes the importance of faith, adding, “With God, all things are possible.”
