FUNAAB to Convert Soyinka’s Residence into Research Center

Cursory: The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, plans to convert Prof Wole Soyinka’s residence into a library and writers’ research center to address declining reading habits among Nigerian youth. The university aims to support initiatives promoting reading and creativity, including establishing a state-of-the-art bookshop and a 24-hour study facility.

The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Prof Olusola Kehinde, has revealed the university’s intention to transform the residence of Nobel laureate Prof Wole Soyinka in Ijegba, Abeokuta, Ogun State, into a top-notch library and writers’ research center.

Expressing concern over the diminishing reading habits among young Nigerians, the vice chancellor affirmed the university’s readiness to support initiatives aimed at reversing this trend.

He made these remarks while hosting executives from the Association of Nigerian Authors, Ogun State chapter, during a recent courtesy visit, as stated in a release on Sunday.

“FUNAAB does not joke with creativity and it’s in the process of turning Professor Wole Soyinka’s Ijegba residence into a Library and Writers’ haven for research,” Kehinde said.

Earlier, the Ogun ANA Chairman, Dr. Chris Omotosho, lauded FUNAAB for integrating culture into its educational curricula despite being a science-based institution.

“I was pleasantly surprised when I heard about the FUNAAB Theatre Group. This is something novel; it is a laudable initiative that will further enrich the minds of students through the graphic dramatisation of information,” he said.
