Inspiring 99-Year-Old Man Celebrates High School Graduation, Finally Gets His Diploma

Cursory: Dr. Jack Hetzel, a 99-year-old resident of Big Sandy, Texas, fulfilled his lifelong dream of graduating from high school. A pastor, World War II veteran, and accomplished author, Dr. Hetzel enlisted in the army and served in major battles.

Often times people have used the sayings “age is just a number’ and “it’s never too late to chase your dreams” in situations where there are not even necessary. They are so commonly used that it doesn’t hold any true meaning anymore. However, the life of a 99-year-old overachiever has shown and reminded folks of the true meaning of those words again.

The resident of Big Sandy, Texas has set an inspiring example. Dr. Jack Hetzel, a remarkable 99-year-old individual, recently achieved his lifelong goal of graduating from high school.

Walking alongside current high school seniors, he proudly fulfilled a dream that had eluded him for many years. Dr. Hetzel, a pastor and a veteran of World War II, has accumulated a wealth of experiences and witnessed significant historical events throughout his nearly century-long life.

Having enlisted in the army in 1941, he actively participated in five major battles of the war. In addition to his military service, he authored eight books and dedicated his Sundays to delivering sermons at the First United Methodist Church.

However, amidst his remarkable accomplishments, there was one unfulfilled aspiration that had always remained with Dr. Hetzel: earning his high school diploma. Despite not having the opportunity in his younger days, he persevered and finally realized this cherished dream.

“I have longed to get this diploma since 1948 when I passed my GED,” he told KETK news. “But the school that I had attended I’d only attended to third grade, and they didn’t have any record of it so I couldn’t get a diploma from that school.”

Hetzel proudly walked the stage in his cap and gown to receive his long-awaited and very much-deserved degree. “It’s very exciting,”

Dr. Hetzel says. “You see when you have little education and then you have to come up through life and you have to front life with little education, you have to learn somehow.”

Hetzel shared that he often used other people as his teachers after he did not complete his schooling.

“I used other people to be my teachers, so if I got a question, I’d go to somebody that knew and asked them the question and then I would use it in everyday life,” he says.

Upon discovering the inspiring story of Dr. Jack Hetzel, the superintendent of Big Sandy Independent School District (ISD), Mike Burns, extended a heartfelt invitation. He offered Dr. Hetzel the extraordinary opportunity to walk across the stage alongside the graduating class of 2021 and receive his long-awaited high school diploma.

Superintendent Burns decided to keep Dr. Hetzel’s appearance as a delightful surprise, ensuring that it would be a memorable and meaningful moment for everyone involved, including the other students.

“We’re really proud to be able to give him something that means so much to him,” Burns says. “It’s gonna be one of the highlights of my school year for sure.”

Hetzel does not take the opportunity he was given for granted and is well aware of how fortunate he is to have reached all of his significant accomplishments, no matter how late in life. “99 years of age, that’s something to be blessed about,” he says.

“How much more do I need?” Hetzel celebrated his 100th birthday on November 18, 2021, six months after finally graduating
