JAMB No Longer Mandatory for Tertiary Admissions – FG Unveils New Policy

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that JAMB is no longer mandatory for admission into tertiary institutions, allowing universities, polytechnics, and colleges to admit students based on their SSCE results to improve access and reduce entry barriers.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced a major change to the tertiary education admission process: the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is no longer a mandatory requirement for gaining admission into universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

Announced under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and implemented by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, the policy aims to expand access to higher education and reduce the pressure of the JAMB examination system.

Key Changes:

  • SSCE-Based Admission: Students can now be admitted based on Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) results such as WAEC or NECO.
  • Minimum Entry Requirements:
    • Universities: Five credits including English; Mathematics required for science, tech, and social science courses.
    • Polytechnics (ND): Four credits including English.
    • HND Programs: Five credits including English and Mathematics.
  • More Autonomy for Institutions:
While JAMB and UTME are still in place, they are no longer the sole path to admission. Institutions can now independently admit students based on SSCE performance.

The government says this reform will remove barriers and provide fairer opportunities for students across the country to further their education.
