Kenyan engineer Gladys Ngetich earned a PhD in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford through the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship, gaining global recognition for her aerospace research, leadership in STEM, and dedication to empowering young professionals.


Gladys Ngetich, a trailblazing Kenyan scholar, has completed a PhD in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, after receiving the highly competitive Rhodes Scholarship.
A graduate of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) in Kenya, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Gladys was selected for the Rhodes Scholarship to pursue her postgraduate education at Oxford. Her PhD focused on developing innovative cooling technologies for jet engines—a field at the forefront of aerospace engineering.
During her time at Oxford, Gladys earned several notable accolades, including the Tanenbaum Fellowship and the Schmidt Science Fellowship, awarded to top Rhodes Scholars for outstanding interdisciplinary research. She also conducted postdoctoral research at MIT’s Space Enabled research group, expanding her expertise in engineering for space applications.
Gladys’ impact goes beyond academia. She was co-awarded a patent in partnership with Rolls-Royce Plc, and her research has been featured on platforms like BBC Science, the Oxford Science Blog, and Medium. She has also been recognized as a Skoll World Forum Fellow for her advocacy and work empowering young women in STEM across Kenya.
In 2018, she received the Young Engineer Turbo Expo Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and was listed among Kenya’s Top 40 Under 40 Women by Business Daily Africa.
As a changemaker, Gladys co-founded Sqdgo.com, a platform for career support, and established the Geen Foundation, which helps young professionals unlock their full potential.
