Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Ododo, has signed a bill converting the Okene Reference Hospital into the CUSTECH Teaching Hospital, paving the way for the launch of a full-time MBBS program and enhanced healthcare training.

Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Ododo, has officially signed a bill transforming the state-of-the-art Reference Hospital in Okene into the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) Teaching Hospital.
The announcement was made on Tuesday in Lokoja by the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Kingsley Fanwo.
This transition follows the National Universities Commission’s approval of CUSTECH’s full-time Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program, along with other medical courses.
Fanwo stated that the move lays a solid foundation for the successful launch of the medical programs at CUSTECH.
He explained that the achievement is the outcome of months of coordinated efforts between the university, the State Ministry of Health, and the State Ministry of Education. Fanwo also commended the State House of Assembly for passing the bill, which Governor Ododo has now signed into law.
The commissioner highlighted the administration’s commitment to improving healthcare, noting that the former Reference Hospital, now the CUSTECH Teaching Hospital, is equipped with world-class medical facilities, some of which are being introduced for the first time in Africa.
“With this development, CUSTECH will be able to utilize cutting-edge medical technology to train exceptional healthcare professionals who will serve Kogi State and beyond,” Fanwo added.
He further underscored the administration’s dedication to both healthcare and education, calling the signing a major milestone in the state’s growth. Fanwo also expressed gratitude to the State House of Assembly for their collaboration in achieving this historic feat.
With the bill now a law, CUSTECH is set to begin its MBBS program.
