Lagos Gov, Chinese Company Sign MoU for 50 MW Solar Power Project for LASU and Other Institutions

The Lagos State Government has signed an MoU with a Chinese company to install solar power systems at key educational institutions, aiming to generate 50 MW of cleaner electricity and reduce reliance on grid power and fossil fuels, as part of its commitment to sustainable energy and Nigeria’s broader energy transition goals.

The Lagos State Government has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Chinese company to deploy solar power systems in key educational institutions across the state.

The agreement was announced by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during the ongoing Africa-China Cooperation Summit (#FOCAC2024) in Beijing, where President Bola Tinubu is leading Nigeria’s delegation on a state visit to China.

The project aims to generate approximately 50 megawatts (MW) of cleaner and more affordable electricity by installing solar power systems at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology, Lagos State University of Education, and Lagos State College of Medicine.

Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that the initiative is expected to significantly reduce the institutions’ dependence on grid electricity and fossil fuels, thereby supporting environmental sustainability.

Emphasizing Lagos State’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions as part of its economic development strategy, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the importance of this initiative.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who witnessed the signing, also underscored the significance of such collaborations in advancing Nigeria’s energy transition, aligning with Lagos State’s broader vision to lead in renewable energy adoption, enhance energy security, and lower its carbon footprint.
