Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu awarded ₦10 million to Isioma Sybil Nwosu, LASU’s best graduating student with a CGPA of 4.93, during the university’s 28th convocation, which celebrated over 11,000 graduates and honored distinguished individuals.


Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has gifted ₦10 million to Miss Isioma Sybil Nwosu, the overall best graduating student of Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2023/2024 academic session. Nwosu, a Biochemistry graduate, earned a remarkable Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.93.
The announcement was made during LASU’s 28th Convocation Ceremony held at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, Ojo campus. Represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the Governor praised Nwosu’s dedication and encouraged other students to follow her example of academic excellence.
The convocation marked the graduation of 11,917 students across various academic levels. These included 971 Diploma certificates, 8,711 First Degrees, and 2,235 Postgraduate Degrees—comprising 302 Postgraduate Diplomas, 1,132 Academic Masters, 639 Professional Masters, 125 PhDs, and 37 Professional Doctoral Degrees.
The event also celebrated the achievements of distinguished personalities. Among them were Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd), Chairman of the NDLEA, who received a Doctor of Humane Letters, and former Lagos State Deputy Governor Otunba Olufemi Pedro, who was awarded a Doctor of Business. Additionally, Prof. Joseph Abayomi Omoniyi Olagunju was conferred the title of Distinguished Professor.
In his address, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the transformative power of education in driving societal development. He highlighted his administration’s commitment to strengthening state-owned institutions through initiatives like the Job Initiative Lagos (JIL), aligning with the THEMES+ agenda.
“Education is the backbone of our society. We must foster a culture that values knowledge and innovation,” Sanwo-Olu remarked.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello celebrated LASU’s academic progress, noting that 43 out of 44 programmes earned accreditation in 2023. She also announced the introduction of international postgraduate programmes under the Africa Centre of Excellence for Innovative and Transformative STEM Education.
Chancellor Prof. Gbolahan Elias (SAN) urged graduates to remain resilient and continue to uphold LASU’s legacy as ambassadors of excellence.
