Cursory: Dipo Fasina, former President of ASUU, has been located after being reported missing. The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission and Nigerian High Commission in Turkey found him. Fasina is a distinguished polyglot and has contributed to academia, including establishing a department at a university. His activism has led to conflicts with the Nigerian government, including a prolonged strike during his tenure as ASUU President and an altercation with former President Olusegun Obasanjo.


Dipo Fasina, a former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) widely known as ‘Jingo,’ has been located after being reported missing.
Previous reports from PREMIUM TIMES indicated that Fasina had been missing since Saturday, July 1, 2023. He was traveling to Algeria upon the invitation of the Algerian government but missed his connecting flight in Istanbul, Turkey.
However, on Sunday, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) confirmed that Fasina had been found.NiDCOM, along with the incumbent ASUU president, Prof. Emmanuel Sodeke, had earlier confirmed that Fasina’s whereabouts were unknown, but efforts were being made by the lecturers’ union to ensure his safe return home.
In a statement released by NiDCOM on Sunday afternoon, titled ‘Update On The Missing Ex-ASUU President, Dipo Fasina ‘Jingo,’ it was announced that the academic had been located.
It said, “He has been found.“
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, in collaboration with the Nig high commission in Turkey, has successfully located Prof Fasina who went missing for a few days at Istanbul Airport while connecting on a flight back home.
“Mr. Fasina, 76, was traveling to Algeria when he was said to have missed his connecting flight from Istanbul, Turkey.
“The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, in collaboration with the Nig high commission in Turkey, has successfully located Prof Fasina who went missing for a few days at Istanbul Airport while connecting on a flight back home.
“A big thanks to the Nigerian Ambassador to Turkey who immediately sent officials to the Airport to physically locate him in the very busy and huge Istanbul Airport.
Fasina, a polyglot, reportedly speaks Yoruba, English, French, Russian, and Ukrainian. He also reads and translates German and Spanish.Fasina was the founding coordinator of the Philosophy Department of the Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University).
As per reports, Dipo Fasina made the decision to utilize his honorarium for the establishment of the departmental library. Fasina’s involvement in activism led to various encounters with the Nigerian government.
In 1986, he was detained under the Ibrahim Babangida regime. In 2001, he was elected as the National President of ASUU and led one of the most prolonged strikes in Nigeria’s academic history.
At one point, Fasina had a heated disagreement with President Olusegun Obasanjo at the Presidential Villa, which resulted in the President becoming angered and leaving the meeting.
