To tackle the severe teacher shortage, the Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board has reassigned 1,300 administrative staff to teaching positions statewide.

In a decisive move to address the acute shortage of teachers in public schools, the Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB) has redeployed 1,300 administrative staff to teaching roles across the state.
Dr. Kassim Muhammad Kassim, Executive Chairman of NSUBEB, issued the directive during a meeting with education secretaries representing the 13 local government areas and 18 development areas. His decision followed data collection revealing that 3,422 personnel, including supervisors, were occupying non-teaching roles—many of whom are qualified teachers.
“We can’t justify a teacher shortage while capable hands sit behind desks in administrative roles,” Kassim stated.
He emphasized that the redeployed staff would be primarily posted to rural areas, where the need for teachers is most critical. Kassim also questioned the logic of having clusters of supervisory staff in urban areas while remote schools suffer from understaffing.
In addition, Kassim announced that the state government had approved the recruitment of 4,800 new teachers under an initiative titled ‘Recruitment of Teachers in Rural Areas’. He stressed that all new hires would be posted strictly to underserved rural schools, with no urban postings available.
The dual strategy—redeployment and rural recruitment—is aimed at closing the teacher gap and improving access to basic education across Nasarawa State.
