Nigerian Graduate Sues Donald Trump Over Student Visa Revocation, Citing Career Setback

Nigerian graduate Cynderila Patrick is suing U.S. President Donald Trump over the revocation of her student visa, arguing it violated her rights and jeopardized her career after earning a master’s degree in Chemical Engineering.

Nigerian graduate Cynderila Patrick is suing U.S. President Donald Trump over the revocation of her student visa, arguing it violated her rights and jeopardized her career after earning a master’s degree in Chemical Engineering.

Patrick, who completed her master’s degree in Chemical Engineering in 2024, says the cancellation has derailed her plans to secure a work permit and gain professional experience in the U.S. She argues that the Trump administration’s sweeping immigration crackdown, which has targeted minor infractions like traffic violations, unfairly impacted her and many other international students.

Her attorney, Rhys Cartwright-Jones, emphasized in court filings that Patrick received no prior notice or explanation, a violation of her constitutional right to due process. Her case, now before U.S. District Judge Sara Lioi in Akron, Ohio, seeks a permanent reinstatement of her visa.

“This disruption will severely hinder her ability to gain professional experience in the United States, undermine the educational investment she has made, and place her at a competitive disadvantage in her field,” her lawyer stated.

Patrick’s lawsuit is part of a broader wave of backlash against recent Trump-era immigration policies that have revoked more than 1,000 student visas nationwide, including 61 in Ohio—14 of which were from Youngstown State.

While at YSU, Patrick distinguished herself academically, earning a $1,000 Intel scholarship and actively participating in organizations such as the National Society of Black Engineers and the Society of Women Engineers.

As her case moves through the courts, it could set a critical legal precedent for international students facing visa-related challenges under evolving U.S. immigration policies.
