A Nigerian woman named Ojotule Okeyi, who once sold goods on the streets to pay for her education, has achieved a significant milestone by securing the Mastercard scholarship, enabling her to pursue a master’s degree at the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom.
‘From selling on the streets looking for my next school fees, to studying at the The University of Edinburgh, with a fully funded scholarship,” she said.
Sharing her remarkable journey on LinkedIn, she highlighted the transformative impact of the scholarship on her life, transitioning from street vending to studying at a prestigious institution with full financial support.
Before receiving the Mastercard Foundation scholarship, Ojotule faced numerous rejections from other scholarship programs, experiencing a challenging period of perseverance and determination. Despite the setbacks, she persisted and eventually earned the scholarship, marking a turning point in her life.
Her master’s degree in Africa and International Development from the University of Edinburgh symbolizes not only her personal achievement but also represents a triumph for her mother and all widows who have made sacrifices to support their children’s education.
Ojotule sees her accomplishment as a victory for women who have faced discrimination for bearing only female children and for girls challenging gender stereotypes.
During her time at the university, she served as a Postgraduate Student Representative and an Edinburgh Earth Fellow. Ojotule expressed deep gratitude to the Mastercard Foundation for investing in her future and for making her dreams a reality.
