After years of setbacks and persistence, Amazu Gina has achieved a remarkable academic feat, graduating as the only first-class student in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences at the University of Calabar.
Gina’s journey was far from easy. She wrote the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) three times before finally gaining admission to study Biochemistry—a course that tested her limits both mentally and emotionally. What was supposed to be a four-year program extended into five due to unforeseen challenges along the way.
In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), Gina reflected on her journey, describing it as one that began with deep self-doubt and uncertainty. “A journey that started with self-doubt but ended with God’s reassurance,” she wrote.
Despite the hurdles, Gina rose to the top of her class, earning a First Class Honours degree. Her exceptional academic performance secured her the award for Best Graduating Student in her department and the entire faculty—comprising five departments and over 500 students.
Gina’s story is a powerful reminder that perseverance, faith, and resilience can turn years of rejection into a story of excellence and triumph.
