Nnamdi Ezenwa, a Nigerian-American, made history as the first Black valedictorian in 13 years at Texas Southern University’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law, highlighting his dedication to academics and his commitment to inspiring others, while also becoming a licensed attorney in Texas shortly after graduation.

A remarkable achievement has been made by Nnamdi Ezenwa, a talented Nigerian man who has etched his name in history at the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University, becoming the first Black valedictorian in over a decade.
Raised in the United States by Nigerian parents, Nnamdi began his academic journey at Idaho University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Marketing. He then pursued his passion for law and enrolled at Thurgood Marshall School of Law, graduating in 2020 with a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, earning distinction in the process.
Nnamdi’s outstanding academic performance led to his historic recognition as the school’s valedictorian, making him the first Black and Nigerian student to achieve this honor in 13 years.
Beyond his academic excellence, Nnamdi was actively engaged on campus. He served on the Honor Court, participated in the African Law Students Association, and contributed as an editor for the Thurgood Marshall Law Review.
Reflecting on his groundbreaking achievement, Nnamdi expressed his hope that his success would inspire others. “Academics have always been essential to my family and me. It’s an incredible feeling to be recognized like this. I pursued my law degree to set a positive example for others—to demonstrate that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible,” he stated.
Shortly after his graduation, Nnamdi took the Texas Bar Exam. Despite the unpredictability surrounding the exam’s schedule, he stayed focused on his goal. In October 2020, after many hours of diligent study, he was thrilled to learn that he had passed the Texas Bar Exam, officially becoming a licensed attorney in Texas, USA.
Looking to the future, Nnamdi is optimistic about his legal career and profoundly thankful for the support he received throughout his journey. “This year has presented many challenges for all of us, but I am grateful for the blessings and remain hopeful about what lies ahead!” he said.
“I am extremely thankful to all my family, friends, professors, and mentors who supported me every step of the way. The Marathon Continues,” he added.
