NOUN Confers Degrees on Six Kuje Inmates in Abuja

The National Open University of Nigeria awarded degrees to six inmates at Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre in Abuja, underscoring the impact of education as a tool for rehabilitation and reintegration through its partnership with the Nigeria Correctional Service.

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has awarded academic degrees to six inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje, Abuja, marking a significant step in prison education and rehabilitation.

The ceremony, held in Abuja, highlights the ongoing collaboration between NOUN and the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), aimed at expanding access to education within custodial facilities.

Speaking at the event, the Controller-General of the NCoS, Sylvester Nwakuche, commended the graduating inmates for their resilience and commitment to learning despite the challenges of incarceration. He described their success as clear evidence that education remains a powerful tool for rehabilitation and personal transformation.

Degrees earned behind bars

According to the NCoS, the inmates completed various NOUN programmes while in custody. Their qualifications include two Master’s degrees in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution, as well as four Bachelor’s degrees in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution, Political Science, and Criminology and Security Studies.

Nwakuche noted that the achievement reflects NOUN’s dedication to inclusive education, alongside the Correctional Service’s mission to reform inmates and prepare them for meaningful reintegration into society.

Education as a pathway to reintegration

Represented by his deputy, Dr. Amos Kupan, the Controller-General emphasized that education equips inmates with practical skills, renewed confidence, and hope for a productive life after release.

Also speaking at the event, NOUN’s representative, Dr. Francis Enobore, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to extending learning opportunities across correctional centres nationwide. One of the graduating inmates, speaking on behalf of the others, expressed gratitude to NOUN and the Correctional Service for making it possible to pursue higher education while in custody.

The milestone further strengthens the role of education as a cornerstone of rehabilitation within Nigeria’s correctional system.
