Ogun State Shuts School, Suspends Principal Over Student’s Death

The Ogun State Government has shut down Obada Grammar School and suspended its principal following the death of a student allegedly caused by corporal punishment, while promising a thorough investigation and support for the bereaved family.

The Ogun State Government has closed Obada Grammar School in Obada, Idi-Emi, following the death of an SS2 student, Monday Arijo.

The shutdown comes after the arrest and suspension of the teacher allegedly responsible for the student’s death, reportedly caused by corporal punishment. The school’s principal, Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo, was also suspended for permitting the use of corporal punishment in violation of state regulations.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Dapo Abiodun, Mr. Lekan Adeniran, on Tuesday.

According to the statement, Governor Abiodun directed the school’s closure and ordered the formation of a panel to investigate the incident. He assured the public that those found responsible would face legal action.

Representatives from the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology have visited the bereaved family to offer condolences and gather firsthand information about the event to aid the investigation.

The delegation included the Director of Secondary and Higher Education, the Principals-General of Egba and Yewa Divisions, the Zonal Education Officer of Imeko-Afon, and representatives from ANCOPPS, the Trade Union Congress, and ASSUS.

During the visit, the officials extended their sympathies to the grieving family and promised the government’s support throughout this difficult period. They assured the family that a detailed investigation would be conducted and justice would be pursued.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Idi-Emi also promised that the case would be thoroughly investigated, with justice ensured. He reassured the family of the safety of other students at the school.

In addition to expressing their condolences, the officials presented the family with a condolence letter and a cash gift of N500,000. The family, while acknowledging the visit, shared their profound grief and shock at the sudden loss of their child.
