Ondo Varsity Students Drown in Hotel Swimming Pool

Two Adekunle Ajasin University students, Oludere Opeyemi (22) and Adegbola Blessing (19), drowned in a hotel swimming pool during a matriculation party in Akungba-Akoko, prompting a police investigation into safety lapses.

Two students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, died after drowning in a hotel swimming pool during a party for newly matriculated students. The victims, Oludere Opeyemi, 22, and Adegbola Blessing, 19, were found unconscious in the pool.

Blessing was discovered first, around 8 pm on January 29, rescued, given first aid, and taken home after regaining consciousness. Shortly after, Opeyemi was found unconscious, rescued, and rushed to State Hospital, Ikare-Akoko, where he was confirmed dead.

Tragically, Blessing also passed away early January 30. Police operatives were deployed to investigate, inviting hotel manager Ayomide Badejo and the pool manager for questioning.

The case was transferred to the command’s monitoring unit for thorough investigation. Remains were deposited at State Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Police Commissioner Adebowale Lawal advised hotel owners to prioritize guest safety, installing safety equipment and ensuring supervision.
