Opinion : Why Nigerian Students Should Acquire Skills As ASUU extends strike

The lingering impasse between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the federal government is indeed a nightmare for students’ future and the nation’s education sector.

Undoubtedly, it is affecting the student’s future, especially those from the less-privileged background.

Although ASUU is now on a fresh four-week warning strike, the Nigerian government has refused to implement agreements that led to the suspension of its nine-month prolonged strike in 2020. This endless acrimony between the federal government and the ASUU clash is incapacitating students and is muddling their academic sessions.

Students across the country from different universities will be going helter-skelter to their various homes. Those who were engaged in businesses will continue where they left off.

Handicraft or skills acquisition is one of the most reliable means of income in today’s world economy. As a student, if you have any quality service you can exhibit to people, you are sure to be making a structured income, all year round, uninterrupted, as long as your service is good. Never be depressed from learning a skill for a long time because normally, skills learning takes time to complete apprenticeship tasks.

Fortunately, there are many skills that you can learn as a student within a short time. You will be able to start making money for yourself just within a short period. As a student you need to have a great skill, be it handwork or other types of skills, that whereas many jobs will fail, skills hardly fail you. Also, when you have a skill, it becomes easier for you to venture into a business because you have something of value to offer.

As a student, you can learn the following skills: mobile phone repair, shoemaking and repairs, makeup business, web development, mobile apps development, graphic design and graphic art, laptop repair, professional photographer, baking (snacks, making cakes), web design, painting, digital marketing, painting, electronic repairs, hairstyling, iron bending and panel beating, etc.

Lastly, I wish ASUU and the federal government would suspend this industrial action. Nigerian students urge you to bring an end to this nightmare.
