Recently, a woman known as Just Adetoun publicly called out the mother for making her daughter assist in sweeping their neighborhood at 4 am, triggering a wave of outrage.
In the wake of the backlash, Just Adetoun later issued an apology to the mother and committed to providing her with a monthly contribution of 19,000.
Tunde Onakoya responded to this situation by condemning the public humiliation directed at the mother in front of her daughter.
While he acknowledged that the child should not be compelled to work, he emphasized the need for compassion rather than criticism in these challenging circumstances.
The philanthropist announced his intention to cover the girl’s educational expenses all the way through university.
He expressed his sentiments, stating, “It is incredibly harsh to belittle a mother in front of her child. To compound this, the incident was recorded and shared on social media.
Back in 2016, my own mother worked as a cleaner, and it pained me deeply that I couldn’t support her financially. I often insisted on accompanying her, helping to carry water to speed up the work so we could return home before daybreak; I wanted to remain unseen. The struggle that forces one to conceal their labor during the night is an agonizing reality.
Indeed, that child should not be working, but what she and her mother truly deserve is empathy. The only compassionate response is to assist those in need.
If no one has yet stepped forward, I would like to take on the responsibility of funding the girl’s education through university. I hope this brings some relief to them during these incredibly tough times.
