UNIPORT’s Best Engineering Graduate Shares How She Missed UNILAG Admission

After missing admission to UNILAG despite scoring highly in JAMB and post-UTME, Ijeoma Nwosu gained admission to UNIPORT, graduated as the Faculty of Engineering’s best student with a 4.80 CGPA, held several leadership positions, and now hopes to build an international career in civil engineering.

A 23-year-old civil engineering graduate, Ijeoma Nwosu, emerged as the best graduating student in the Faculty of Engineering at University of Port Harcourt with an impressive CGPA of 4.80. Despite originally hoping to study at University of Lagos, she was unable to secure admission after her departmental cut-off mark increased beyond her cumulative score.

Ijeoma revealed that after finishing secondary school in 2018, she scored 281 in JAMB and performed well in UNILAG’s post-UTME examination, but narrowly missed admission. Determined to pursue her dream course, she applied to UNIPORT the following year, where she gained admission to study Civil Engineering.

According to her, her passion for engineering came from a fascination with how undeveloped land can be transformed into impressive structures and infrastructure. Although she initially considered Architecture, her parents encouraged her to choose Civil Engineering, a decision she embraced.

Reflecting on her university journey, Ijeoma said she accepted UNIPORT as the place where she was meant to be and approached her studies with dedication and consistency. She credited her academic success to reviewing lecture notes regularly, studying courses multiple times before examinations, and seeking clarification from lecturers whenever necessary.

Beyond academics, she actively participated in student leadership, serving as Assistant Course Representative throughout her five years, Departmental Assistant General Secretary, and Faculty Vice President. She explained that balancing leadership and academics required discipline and careful prioritisation.

Looking ahead, Ijeoma hopes to build a successful career in Civil Engineering, particularly within the oil and gas sector, while also exploring opportunities in Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE). She expressed a desire to gain international experience and learn from engineering practices around the world.
